If crossing the Panama Canal has been on your list for years, this 16-night voyage on Brilliant Lady is a strong way to do it with an adults-only crowd. You leave Miami on March 26, 2027, sail south through the Caribbean to Colombia and Panama, transit the canal, then work your way up the Pacific coast of Central America and Mexico before arriving in Los Angeles on April 11. Late March and early April fall in the dry season along much of this route.

Cartagena is the first big highlight. Its walled old city, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is full of colonial churches, flower-draped balconies and plazas that come alive in the evening. At Colón you are on Panama’s Caribbean side, close to the canal’s newer Agua Clara locks. The canal transit itself is the day most guests remember: a full day watching the ship rise and fall through the locks and cross Gatun Lake.

On the Pacific side, Puntarenas is a gateway to Costa Rica’s rainforests, river wildlife cruises and coffee country. Puerto Quetzal is the port for Antigua Guatemala, a colonial city ringed by volcanoes that rewards the drive inland. The final call, Cabo San Lucas, finishes the trip with El Arco, the famous rock arch at Land’s End, and a last taste of Mexican sunshine. Between ports you will have a good number of sea days, which suit readers, spa regulars and anyone who likes a slower rhythm.

Brilliant Lady is one of Virgin’s newer ships, with the same design-led style and adults-only energy as its sisters. Restaurants, Wi-Fi, gratuities, basic drinks and group fitness are included, so a long voyage like this one does not keep adding up at every meal. Premium drinks, spa time and excursions cost extra, and we can help you prioritize which ports to book tours in.

A one-way canal voyage takes a little more planning on flights and hotels at each end. Tell us your dates and preferences and we will price the cruise, check current offers and help you line up the rest.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a passport for a Panama Canal cruise from Miami to Los Angeles?
Yes, plan on a valid passport. This is a one-way voyage that visits several foreign countries, and requirements depend on your citizenship, so we will confirm the details for your group.

How long does a Panama Canal transit take on a cruise?
A full transit typically takes most of a day, from early morning through late afternoon, depending on traffic and the lock schedule. It is one of the most memorable days of the trip, so plan to spend it out on deck.

What is the weather like on a Panama Canal cruise in late March?
Late March and early April are generally in the dry season for Panama and much of Central America, so expect hot, humid days with less rain than later in the year. Pack sun protection and light clothing.
