This 12-night voyage suits travelers who want to see a long stretch of Australia’s east coast and finish somewhere few cruises reach: the tropical Top End. Seven Seas Explorer sails from Sydney on January 28, 2027, heads north to the Sunshine Coast, follows the Great Barrier Reef coastline of Queensland, rounds Cape York and arrives in Darwin on February 9. It is high summer in Australia, so expect warm days throughout and true tropical heat and humidity in the far north.
The early calls ease you into Queensland. Mooloolaba is a relaxed Sunshine Coast beach town with a long sandy shoreline and a lively café strip. Gladstone is a working harbor, but it is also a gateway to the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef. Airlie Beach is the jumping-off point for the Whitsunday Islands, where Whitehaven Beach and its fine white silica sand are a frequent favorite with our clients.
Farther north, Townsville faces Magnetic Island, known for its bays, walking trails and wild koalas, while Cairns opens up two World Heritage areas at once: the outer reef for snorkeling and diving, and the Daintree rainforest inland. Cooktown is a quieter, history-rich stop where James Cook beached the Endeavour for repairs in 1770. After two days at sea across the top of the continent, Darwin shows a different Australia, with Aboriginal art, World War II history and access to Litchfield and Kakadu national parks if you extend your stay.
Seven Seas Explorer is one of Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ all-suite ships, and the line is known for an inclusive approach: most fares cover shore excursions, fine wines and spirits, specialty dining, prepaid gratuities and Wi-Fi, and many include round-trip air. With five sea days on this route, there is real time to enjoy the ship between reef days. We always confirm exactly what your fare includes before you book.
If this route appeals, send us your preferred suite category and travel dates. We will check current fares, availability and promotions, and help you plan a few nights in Sydney or Darwin around the cruise.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the weather like in northern Australia in February?
February falls in the wet season across tropical Queensland and Darwin, so expect heat, high humidity and tropical downpours or storms. Sydney and the Sunshine Coast are in warm summer weather with less humidity. Light clothing, sun protection and a rain layer are worth packing.
Is it stinger season on the Great Barrier Reef in February?
Yes. Roughly November to May is marine stinger season in tropical Queensland waters, and reef tour operators usually provide full-body stinger suits. Follow local guidance and use netted swimming areas where they are provided.
Do I need a visa to visit Australia on a cruise?
Most visitors other than Australian and New Zealand citizens need an electronic travel authority or visa before arriving in Australia. Requirements depend on your citizenship, so we will confirm what applies to you well before you sail.
