This 11-night Explora III voyage is a good fit for travelers who have done the classic Caribbean and want something less familiar. It begins on April 22, 2027, at Amador, the causeway port at the Pacific entrance to the Panama Canal near Panama City, then works north along the Pacific coast of Central America and Mexico before finishing in Los Angeles on May 3. Late April is the tail end of the dry season along much of this coast.
After two days at sea, Acajutla is the port for El Salvador’s Ruta de las Flores, a scenic road of coffee country and small colonial towns. Puerto Quetzal is the gateway to Antigua Guatemala, a UNESCO-listed colonial city ringed by volcanoes and known for its cobblestone streets and ruined churches. It is one of the most memorable shore days on this side of the Americas.
Puerto Chiapas, near Mexico’s border with Guatemala, gives access to the archaeological site of Izapa and the cacao and coffee farms of the Soconusco region. Huatulco is a protected stretch of the Oaxacan coast with a string of calm bays, good for swimming and snorkeling. Puerto Vallarta, the last call, pairs a walkable malecón and old town with the Sierra Madre rising right behind the beaches. Five sea days in all give the voyage a restful rhythm.
Explora III is one of the newer ships from Explora Journeys, the MSC Group’s luxury line. Every suite faces the ocean and has its own terrace, and the onboard style leans toward a refined European resort rather than a busy cruise ship. Fares generally include beverages, Wi-Fi, gratuities and most dining; we’ll confirm the details for your booking.
We can help you plan a night in Panama City before sailing or a few days in Los Angeles at the end. Reach out with your travel dates and we’ll look at suites, fares and current offers.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this Explora cruise go through the Panama Canal?
No. The voyage starts at Amador on the Pacific side of the canal and sails north, so it does not include a canal transit. Many guests add a pre-cruise night in Panama City to see the Miraflores Locks from land.
What is the weather like on Mexico’s Pacific coast in late April?
Late April is generally hot and dry along the Pacific coast of Central America and Mexico, before the summer rains arrive. Plan for sun protection and lightweight clothing.
How many sea days are on the Panama to Los Angeles cruise?
The itinerary has five days at sea, including two at the start and two before arriving in Los Angeles. They are a good chance to enjoy the ship’s pools, spa and dining.
