This nine-night Explora II voyage suits travelers who want a first or second look at the Mediterranean without the summer crowds. You board in Civitavecchia, the port for Rome, on March 5, 2027, then trace a line west along the Italian and French coasts, cross to the islands, and finish with a run down Spain’s eastern shore into Barcelona on March 14. Early spring brings mild days, greener hillsides and shorter lines at the big sights.

Livorno is the gateway to Florence and Pisa, and a March visit to the Uffizi or the Duomo is far calmer than the same day in July. Cannes follows, with its palm-lined Croisette and easy reach of Antibes and the perched villages behind the Riviera. In Ajaccio, Napoleon’s birthplace on Corsica, you can wander a compact old town set against a mountainous island interior.

Mahón on Menorca sits on one of the largest natural harbors in the Mediterranean, and the island is known for its quiet coves and local gin. After a day at sea, the ship stays overnight in Málaga, which gives you time for the Alcazaba and the Picasso Museum, or a full day trip to the Alhambra in Granada. Alicante, with its hilltop Santa Bárbara Castle, is the last stop before Barcelona.

Explora Journeys is the luxury brand of the MSC Group, and its ships are built around ocean-front suites, each with a private terrace. The pace is deliberately unhurried, with longer port calls and an overnight here and there. Most fares include beverages, Wi-Fi, gratuities and most dining, but inclusions vary, so ask us what your fare covers.

If you would like to add a few nights in Rome before you sail or in Barcelona afterward, we can arrange it. Send us your preferred suite category and we’ll check current fares and any promotions on this departure.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the weather like in the Mediterranean in early March?
Expect mild, changeable spring weather, with daytime temperatures often in the high 50s to mid 60s Fahrenheit and the chance of rain. Pack layers and a light waterproof jacket.

Can I visit the Alhambra from Málaga on this cruise?
Yes, the overnight in Málaga makes a Granada day trip practical, since the drive is roughly an hour and a half each way. Alhambra tickets are timed and sell out, so we recommend booking well ahead.

Do I need a visa for a cruise from Rome to Barcelona?
U.S. citizens generally need a passport valid for at least three months beyond departure from the Schengen Area, and ETIAS pre-registration may apply by 2027. Requirements depend on your citizenship, so we’ll confirm what you need when you book.
