This seven-night Explora III voyage suits travelers who want two of Asia’s great cities with a string of subtropical Japanese islands in between. It departs Shanghai on November 9, 2027, sails south to Okinawa and the outer Ryukyu Islands, then ends with an overnight in Hong Kong on November 16. November is a comfortable time here, after the main typhoon season and before winter.

Shanghai’s Bund, with its colonial-era facades facing the Pudong skyline, is a fine place to start, and the city rewards a day or two before sailing, with the gardens of the old town and the plane-tree-lined streets of the former French Concession close at hand. Naha, capital of Okinawa, has its own culture distinct from mainland Japan, along with a busy market street and sites tied to the old Ryukyu Kingdom.

The Miyako Islands are known for clear water and white-sand beaches, linked by long bridges that make for scenic drives. Ishigaki, farther south, is a gateway to coral reefs and to Kabira Bay, one of Japan’s most celebrated coastal views. The voyage ends with an overnight in Hong Kong, giving you an evening on Victoria Harbour and time for the Peak, the markets of Kowloon or dim sum before you fly.

Explora III is part of Explora Journeys, the luxury line from the MSC Group. Every suite is ocean-front with a private terrace, and the onboard style is quiet and European, a welcome contrast to the energy of the two big cities at either end. Fares usually include beverages, Wi-Fi, gratuities and most dining, but terms vary, so ask us what is included.

Asia itineraries have more moving parts, from entry rules to flight timing, and we’re glad to handle them for you. Share your plans and we’ll confirm fares, suite availability and any extras for this sailing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a visa for a cruise from Shanghai to Hong Kong?
Entry rules for mainland China, Japan and Hong Kong differ and change from time to time, and some depend on whether you stay in Shanghai before sailing. Requirements depend on your citizenship, so we’ll confirm what you need.

What is the weather like in Okinawa in November?
November is generally warm and pleasant in Okinawa and the southern Ryukyus, with temperatures often in the 70s Fahrenheit. It is usually past the peak of typhoon season.

Should I stay extra nights in Shanghai or Hong Kong?
We suggest at least one night in Shanghai before sailing to guard against flight delays. The overnight in Hong Kong covers a good first look, but many clients add a few more days.
